Statewide exemption details: Texas guide.
Who qualifies
- The property must be your primary residence and you must have an ownership interest. You can't claim a homestead exemption on another residence in Texas or anywhere else. [1]
- If you buy after January 1, you may qualify for the rest of the year if the previous owner wasn't already claiming the exemption. [1]
Deadline
- Texas general deadline: before May 1. Late homestead applications: see the Texas page. [2]
Where and how to file
- Online at bcad.org (Online Services; create a login and upload your ID). [1]
- Or download the application under Forms and submit it electronically at help.bcad.org, by mail, by fax, or in person (411 N Frio St, San Antonio). BCAD says there's never a fee to apply. [1]
Documents needed
- A copy of your Texas driver's license or TX ID card showing the property address. Active military without a Texas license or ID may submit a military ID plus a utility bill for the property. [1]
Do you need to re-file?
